I recently viewed a video by my granddaughter’s school principal, Jessie Hand of Footscray City Primary School, welcoming families to Term 3. It had been under a week that we had been notified by our Premier that we would be returning to remote learning. The direct address to the school community delivered on YouTube as part of the morning message for the first day back on the school app.
With a warmly welcoming tone, Jessie Hand made the school’s vision, mission and values the means to drawing focus on how staff, students and parents would pull together as a school community. Here’s an excerpt of what I heard:
We are really proud that as a school we have a mission and vision … Values that have stood the test of COVID-19 and the changes and challenges that our community has been responding to… We come to work every day as educators because we care so much about children and having a positive impact on their learning, engagement, well-being and by doing so we contribute to their growth and achievement… right now … as well as their growth and achievement as they head through their years of school. And as they develop the skills and the ways of thinking that will enable them to be successful in their chosen pathways, we also have values that embody the behaviours and attitudes and ways of thinking that are important all of the time. But these are also important in such unprecedented uncertain times. We are a community that value being responsible, that having a sense of responsibility to ourselves but also to those people around us and to our environment, our world around us. We are a community that value kindness, thinking about others and thinking about how we can support and engage with other people in a way that helps everybody to be feeling connected and to feel safe. And we’re a community that value resilience… we value being able to draw on inner strengths and rise to challenges and to persist when things are hard. We really believe that we have a mission, vision and values that have stood the test of these times and we’re very proud of that and we’re proud of you all and of our staff for living and breathing that mission, vision and values.
